Microneedling treatments have become an extremely popular aesthetic procedures in recent years. There’s a good reason for this – this treatment can address several skin concerns, including enlarged pores, blemishes, uneven complexion, and fine lines in a single treatment.

However, if you have recently scheduled an appointment, you should take a few steps to ensure your skin is ready for the treatment to achieve the best results possible. Keep reading to learn what these steps are.

Getting Ready

Compared to other types of aesthetic treatments, it’s quite easy to prepare for your microneedle appointment. Unlike light or laser treatment, you don’t have to start preparing your skin weeks ahead of your appointment.

Usually, you can start your prep about 24 to 48 hours before your appointment; however, this depends on your skin’s condition.

It’s important to make sure your skin is in good health. You can’t undergo this treatment with an active breakout or infection. This includes active acne, eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, hives, fever blisters, or cold sores. If you have any of these, you must reschedule your appointment.

Guidelines for Prepping Your Skin

There are two important steps that you should follow when preparing your skin for microneedling. The first is to avoid exposure to the sun for a minimum of 24 hours unless you have applied a strong SPF for protection. Any prolonged exposure, including in tanning beds, may lead to irritation during the treatment.

It’s also important to halt the use of some skincare products. This includes acid-based products like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and azelaic acid, along with retinoids. Even though the products are beneficial for the appearance and health of your skin, you should not use them right before or after your microneedling treatment. If you do, you may experience over-drying or skin irritation.

If you are on blood thinners, you may have to stop taking these one to three days before your scheduled appointment.

On the Day of Your Appointment

You can ensure your treatment is done on time by arriving on time and with a fresh face on your appointment day. Be sure to wash it using a gentle cleanser that morning, and don’t wear any serums, perfume, or lotion at the time of your appointment. If you usually wear makeup, or have an appointment later in the day, be sure to remove it before arrival.

To Ensure Your Comfort

You can also take a few steps to improve your comfort during the appointment. For example, if you have sensitive skin, take Tylenol approximately one hour before your appointment time to help reduce discomfort caused by the treatment.
